Visible mending is a technique used to repair a textile and add a funky, new design element rather than trying to hide the repair or make it invisible. Whether you want to keep wearing that favorite pair of jeans where the knee hole got too big to be cute or you want to patch up the elbows on your favorite jacket, visible mending is a great option! Not only does it extend the life of your favorite clothing items, but it keeps them out of the landfill and encourages us to consume fewer textiles.
This workshop is taught by local textile artist Sarah Tyree-Francis (@stfmade). Sarah will share examples of her own work while she discusses basic mending techniques and materials. You'll look at her examples and listen in while Sarah works with everyone to come up with a plan for their own creative visible mend.
Please bring with you a piece of clothing or textile (or 2 or 3!) that needs to be mended so you can get started--and maybe even finished--in class! You'll receive your own mending kit that you can take with you to mend more at home or on the go! (Please note: the book shown in the pictured is *not* included in your take home kit).

You'll have access to our scrap fabric collection but feel free to bring in fabric from home that you'd like to use in your mend. Depending on the intricacy of your mend, you may not finish within the timeframe of the workshop, but you'll have a good start, all the necessary tools, and a plan in place to finish on your own time!
